I find the comments and recommendations of Lela Henke-Dobroth unfair and strikingly biased. Sorry, but your recommendations to the electorate have only hindered my perception of the Ventura County Bar Association. The Bar's endorsement of Mr. Wright is purely comical. Choosing a novice over a tested, well experienced individual, such as Ms. Dobroth is clearly of poor judgment. In conclusion, my family and I will be steadfastly behind the candidacy of Lela Henke- Dobroth for Superior Court Judge. As the first chair of the VCBA Judicial Evaluation Committee, I know how much work goes into each evaluation, and how careful the committee is to maintain neutrality. The group is not a coffee “clutch” or even a coffee klatch; it is a diverse group of lawyers selected for their integrity and willingness to do the hard work necessary to survey bar members and judges, conduct follow up interviews, review candidates’ Personal Data Questionnaires, and meet with judicial candidates. When the committee proposes a rating of “not qualified,” it offers the candidate a chance to come back to discuss the negative comments that led to that rating. The writer displays a lack of information in referring to “Dennis.” The immediately past chair of the committee, Dennis LaRochelle, termed out of the committee when I did last year, and no one else named Dennis serves on either the committee or the Bar Association board of directors. Greg Totten has never served on the committee and Mike Frawley left before Dennis LaRochelle and I did. The post providing the rating includes a link to the JEC’s rules. If the writer has specific information that there has been any violation, he should report it to JEC chair Linda Ash and to the VCBA Board of Directors.
